Pancehovska Rimma

Rimma Pancehovska got her first glimpse of art in her family, her parents in the 1930s were employees of the former joint-stock company “M.S.Kuzņecovs” porcelain, faience and clay products factory. Her father, Josifs Pancehovskis (1900-1952), was a molding master, ceramist and master of the Firing Shop at the Kuzņecovs factory, later the Riga Porcelain and Faience Factory (RPFF). Josifs Pancehovskis’ works were exhibited at several factory production exhibitions in Latvia and abroad and were marked with honorary titles. Rimma Pancehovska inherited from her parents a joy for the plasticity of clay and the compactness of form, which can be seen in the artist’s future work.

After graduating from Riga Secondary School No. 10, Rimma Pancehovska entered the Sculpture Department of the Latvian SSR State Academy of Arts in 1947 (now the Sculpture sub-branch of the Visual Arts Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts (LAA)). The lecturers at the Sculpture Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts were the founders of professional sculpture in Latvia: Teodors Zaļkalns (1876-1972; Head of the Sculpture Department 1944-1945, 1946-1958), Kārlis Zemdega (1894-1963; Head of the Sculpture Department 1940-1941, teacher 1947-1962), Emīls Melderis (1889-1979; teacher 1947-1962, 1958-1971, Head of the Sculpture Department 1945-1946, 1958-1971, consultant until 1979), Kārlis Jansons (1896-1986; teacher 1937-1972, summer internship leader until 1984) and Arnolds Skribnovskis (1908-1989; teacher 1940-1941, 1944-1956).

Rimma Pancehovska graduated from the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts in 1953 with a diploma thesis “The Youth of a Leader”, supervised by Teodors Zaļkalns. Along with Rimma Pancehovska, Pārsla Zaļkalne (1927-1993) graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts in 1953 under Teodors Zaļkalns with a diploma thesis “Conductor Arvīds Jansons”, Rute Svile (1927-2013) with a thesis “Graduate”, Margareta Ilona Siliņa with a thesis “New Sheepfold”.

After graduating from the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts, from 1954-1956. From 1930 to 1939, Rimma Pancehovska worked as a sculptor and modeler at the family-known RPFF (later the former Riga Porcelain Factory), where the company's chief artist was ceramist Zina Ulste (1928-2006). Rimma Pancehovska worked in the Artistic Laboratory, headed by Vera Fjodorova, Elizabete Gegello, and worked together with artists and ceramists: Latvīte Medniece (1924-2018), Ilga Dreiblati, Ilona Priedkalna (1933-2012), Beatrisi Kārkliņa, Regina Karkunova, Aina Mellupi (1925-1994), Ilga Vanaga (1928-2013), etc. In the artistic laboratory, Rimma Pancehovska created product models for figurative small plastic series: “World Dances” with the compositions “Indian Dancer” (majolica, 1954), “Argentine Dancer”; “Līgo”; “Scheherazade” and others. The master of the Mass Preparation and Forming workshops of the RPFF was chemist Zigurds Konstants, later an art historian, who in the creative atmosphere met sculptors Rimma Pancehovska, Mārtiņš Zauras (1915-1998) and promoted the realization of the artists’ creative works at the RPFF. The sculptor also realized her own creative works at the factory from 1953 to 1965.

In addition to working at the RPFF, Rimma Pancehovska worked as a teacher at the Riga Applied Arts High School (now MIKC Riga Design and Art High School) from 1954 to 1959. The teachers of the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts at that time were: painter Jānis Ērglis (1891-1964; RLMV education supervisor 1944-1947, 1953-1959, director 1947-1953, drawing teacher from 1959-?), sculptors – Meijers Furmans (1921-1973; RLMV teacher, director 1953-1959), Eduards Klēbahs (1899-1967; RLMV Decorative Sculpture Department Head, teacher 1949-1967), Līze Dzeguze (1908-1992; RLMV design teacher 1946-1962), painters – Eduards Jurķelis (1910-1978; RLMV painting teacher 1945-197?), Kārlis Sūniņš (1907-1979; RLMV composition teacher 1944-1967), architect Bruno Artmanis (1915-2007; RLMV teacher 1953-1954), ceramist Milda Brutāne (1903-1979; RLMV teacher, head of the Ceramics Department 1942-1965), etc. The future film director Gunārs Piesis (1931-1996), sculptor Valentīna Zeile, Gunārs Ozols, etc. also studied at the RLMV Decorative Sculpture Department.

Later, Rimma Pancehovska was a teacher at the J.Rozentāls Riga Art School (JRRMV, then MIKC NMV Janis Rozentāls Art School) from 1961-1968. The teachers and artists of the JRRMV at that time were: director Elza Stalaža (1915-?; JRRMV director, teacher 1961-1971), painters: Ansis Stunda (1892-1976; JRRMV teacher 1946-?); Arnolds Griķis (1908-1988; JRRMV teacher from 1946), Harijs Blunavs (1924-2006; JRRMV teacher 1957-1991), Vitalijs Karkunovs (1925-2006; JRRMV teacher 1954-2005), Ivars Andris Vijups (1934-2006; JRRMV teacher 1961-2006), Indulis Zariņš (1929-1997; JRRMV teacher 1958-1962) etc. The following artists studied at the JRRMV at that time: Juris Baklāns (1947-1989), Vija Maldupe (1947-1996), Laima Eglīte, Juris Dimiters, etc.

Rimma Pancehovska was a member of the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts since 1956 and was admitted with a recommendation signed by the acting chairman of the Sculpture Section of the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts, sculptor Leja Novožeņeca (1921-2012), and a decision signed by the deputy chairman of the board of the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts, painter, graphic artist Gundega Vaska (1917-2006).
