1925, paper, Indian ink, pen, 30,5x23,5 cm 1 500 EUR / 1 054,21 LVL
Sergejs Civinskis-Civis. Sergejs Civinskis-Civis, born in Daugavpils, shot in Moscow, once was a famous painter and
cartoonist, in the 1920s – 1930s actively published his artworks in Latvian and Russian language periodicals. The world
famous Russian singer Feodor Chaliapin toured in Riga with great success in 1930, 1931 and 1934. It means that in interpreting the artist’s image,
S. Civinskis-Civis, most probably, had not seen Chaliapin in real life, therefore this drawing can be consider to be his artistic vision.
The work was created either as response to some critical articles and press reviews of the time, or as a friendly ironic depiction, a
cartoon. The work was exhibited in Russia three times.
