Ludolfs Liberts. In the 1920s–1930s the highly esteem and productive Latvian painter worked as a stage-designer at the Latvian
National Opera and foreign theatres. His productions were renown for their splendour, especially in pieces with exotic plot lines. The sketch
for the opera “Carmen” perfectly reveals the author’s ability to combine the possibilities of painting and stage art, by creating
a complex landscape of a unique mountain gorge and southern mood, placing richly costumed fi gures in the foreground.
