Janis Liepins (1894.8.VIII – 1964.2.XI)

Born on August 9, 1894 and died on September 2, 1964 in Riga. Painter. Studies at J. Madernieks' Studio in Riga (1909-1910), Art School in Kazan (1911-1913), M. Bernstein's Studio in St. Petersburg (1913 - 1917). Member of the Riga Artists' Group (1921 - 19 ?). Professor of painting at the Art Academy of Latvia (1940 - 1950), head of the figural painting workshop and then head of the easel painting workshop. He introduced fishermen's theme in Latvian genre painting and also created still lifes, genre scenes of varied subject matter (tavern scenes, gamblers, peasants' life) noticeably underscoring the social aspects. In the 1920s, he was active in the left-wing press and produced posters.
