Gennady Sukhanov (1946-2005)

Graphic artist, watercolor painter, master of gravure works and lithographer.

Already in the late 70s, Sukhanov's manner made a splash - then no one worked like that in the schedule in Latvia. What he did was serious not only in an artistic sense, but also in a philosophical one.

Since 1978, Sukhanov has had more than ten solo exhibitions in Riga. For five consecutive years he exhibited in Toronto, Berlin, Grenoble. His works can be found in Tretyakov Gallery.

Sukhanov had bright, abstract compositions. Although, they are not abstract, but are made up from elements of folk ornament and heraldry from different countries, including Latvia.

The combination of sign systems of very different cultures created the feeling of a multi-layered labyrinth.
