Velta Toropina (1925-2007)

Illustrator, painter. Born in family of craftsmen. Husband Alexander Toropins - artist, the twin sons Juris Toropins - scene designer, painter, Igors Celms - the artist on metal. AAL graduated from the Faculty of Painting (1955); diploma - "Before the start" (head of the work E. Kalnins). Participated in exhibitions since 1956. Selected solo exhibitions: Plavinas (together with the sculptor V. Jakabsons) in Jekabpils (1965); Koknese (1975), Riga (1995). Member of the Artists`s Union since 1976.

During her studies, she started to create a visual image of textbooks. One of the authors of journal "Zīlīte". She did the covers, illustrated stories, folk tales, songs, poems, a few magazines "Zīlīte", and library books. She worked as an editor of art magazine "Health" (1968-71), "Zīlīte" (1972-80). She organized competitions and exhibitions of children's drawings. Toropina V. illustrated children's books, calendars. Her works are realistic, lyrical and joyful. In these works children's thoughts and feelings associated with the nature and its processes. She worked mainly in watercolor technique, cultivated a kind of a la prima painting. Sometimes she used gouache and ink.

She painted realistic portraits, landscapes, floral compositions, used oil technique, relatively large format canvases. Firstly artwork colors - discreet, subdued, later - color combinations and contrasts bright, juicy, voluminous and dense brushstrokes. Works are usually not dated, and their titles are often repeated.
