Janis Gailis (1903.19.X Liepaja, Latvia – 1975.2.VII Nevjork, USA)
In 1932 graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia with diploma work “Near the sea ‘’ (under the guidance of V.Purvitis).
Gailis worked as a drawing and art history teacher at Rezekne secondary school.
At 1944 he emigrated to Germany, there he was active in painting. He had solo exhibitions in Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Munich, Dusseldorf, Belgium and Holland.
Since 1950 lived in the USA, prized by Latvian North American Culture fund. Exhibited in the biggest arts centres of USA, Canada and Western Europe; his work was highly valuated.
During his American period, the artist switched to abstract expressionism.
