Rihards Skrubis (1928-1995)

Graphic artist. Born in family of workers. Graduated art and handicraft high school of Liepaja (1950), AAL graphics department (1958, with honors); diploma - Poster cycle "Know Latvia!" colored linocut technique (head of the work. P. Ozolins). Teacher at School of Applied Arts (1960-62), at AAL (1964-78). He was the magazine "Science and Technology" artistic editor (1961-65), decorator at combine "Art" (1974-78), artist at the Science academy (1978-84). At 90th has been the Riga Latvian Society Council and a board member. Contributor in exhibitions since 1954, selected solo exhibitions: In Riga (1964, 1967, 1974, together with the photographer G. Birkmanis, 1979, 1984, 1988), at Saulaine (1967), Tallinn (1973), Liepaja (1979-80, 1987) Jurmala, Salaspils, Koknese (all in1985), Tukums (1985, 1986), Valmiera (1987), Dobele (1988). Memorial exhibition in Riga (1996). Member of the Artists' Union since 1964, the graphics section chairman (1968-72). In 60s, created a monumental generalized, poetic and journalism saturated solution in monochrome linocut cycles. Was made thematic compositions, landscapes, portraits. The ability to enter into human nature, history reveals in reticent, rhythmically sorted compositions which was made in lithographic etching technique. In linocut, woodcarving and in other techniques was made by more than 200 Ex-Libris. He also has been worked in applied graphics and poster art. Hammered works was made by the city of Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine (1976), stained glass sketches for factory Museum "Red Metalurgs" in Liepaja (1979). He wrote the script for a short film "White calls" (1961, dir. I. Krauklitis), wrote poetry, aphorisms. At 1997 R. Scrub constituted and illustrated (plastic carving technique) folksongs selection "Sword of songs."
