Painter, scenic designer, very important personality in Latvian culture.
Ludolfs Liberts attended J. Madernieks studio, learned in sculpture section of Strogonov’s art school (1911. – 1912.). 1915 he graduated School of art in Kazan to the artist Nikolay Fesin and in this time work as a decorator at the Opera in Kazan.
He took part at the 1. World War as artillerist and received awarding about merits at the battleground. At 1921. he returns in Latvia and restart painting.
Artist was pedagogue of Latvia Art academy (1923 – 32), he directed Figurative painting studio (1942 – 44).
1924. – 1937. – he work as a decorator and director at the National Opera  and National Theatre and also as guest director and decorator at the Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.
L. Liberts was a member of Riga artists’ group and artists’ society “Sadarbs” (1924 – 39).
He took part in exhibitions since 1914. His works were exhibited also abroad. Self-exhibitions were organized in Riga (1923, together with K. Ubāns, 1934, 1938), Paris (1927), Brussels (1929), Berlin (1934, 1938) and Stockholm (1938).
At the 30th artist made the sketches to porcelain and faience paintings. Some plates buy oneself in collection National Manufactory Museum in Sevr.
1935. – 1940. and 1941. – 1944. he was a director of State Printing House and Mint.
1938. – artist executes the order of the State president representation interior at Riga’s castle. He was a member of Riga’s artist group and artist’s union “Sadarbs” 1924. – 1939.
1944 Liberts emigrated first to Austria, after the war to Germany was a teacher at Latvian art school. In this period he painted with tempera and published the album “European symphony” with tempera’s paintings (redaction by J. E. Shuler, 1947. in germane and English language, Stuttgart). 1950 went to the USA, New – York. He learned painting in New York City College.
Liberts was awarded at international exhibitions in Paris (1931) and Barcelona (1939, Gold medal). He got scholarships and prizes of Latvia Culture foundation (1923, 1924, 1927). Artist also was awarded with Culture foundation of America’s Latvian association honour price (1952).
Artist painted Europe cities – Venice, Paris (also at night time), and landscapes of Latvia. He also worked in figurative genre, made portraits and sometimes decorative paintings.
At the exhibitions he took part since 1914. The significant is exhibition together with K. Ubans at Riga’s City art museum at 1923. and reviews about exhibition was good.
He was a member of Independent Artist Unity, “Zala varna” and took part in exhibitions organized by Cultural foundation and state in Latvia and abroad. Liberts arranged the Latvian pavilion at international exhibition in Paris, 1937.
In the time, when artist painted in Latvia, at first time in his works was a constructivism. He started paint the romantically European towns after the first trip to Paris in 1924. The big impression came from French painter Kamil Koro (1796. –1875). Liberts paint Venice, Paris (also at night time), Latvian landscapes (Tornakalns), figurative paintings (from Latvian folk), sometime portraits (decorative stile).
1950 went to the USA, New – York. He learned painting in New York City College.
1953. was presented painting by L. Liberts “The Riga’s towers” to president USA – D. Eisenhower as gratitude from American Latvian association. After that this painting was exhibited at the White House at working office and president wrote the gratitude to the chairman of ALA, where was said, that he is proud about this painting.
At the American period artist painted the skyscrapers, romantic motifs of the Central park and colourful landscapes of Florid. Near those paintings he create remembers of Venetia, Riga, Paris and paintings about Bible theme. At the last time of his creative work he depicted reality as a stage vision. At American period he took part at various exhibitions.
Artist paintings are in Latvia’s, François, Austria’s, Sweden’s, Belgium, and Finland, Russian and American’s largest museums and private collections.
The decorations he painted approximately to 70 shows in Latvia, Sweden, Lithuania, Russia, Finland and Yugoslavia. About he is written 13 monographers, books what is published in 5 languages.
